Question What is the impact of urban development on native grasslands?

Fiona Smith is an environmental planner in the Environment and Heritage Division of Parks Victoria. Fiona is currently working on planning for the establishment of the Western Grassland Reserves, a new grassland park which will connect the You Yangs area to the Werribee River across the Volcanic Plains west of Melbourne.
Urban and industrial development impacts grasslands in many ways. The spread of weeds from residential areas, changing the water flows through grasslands and fragmenting grasslands into small isolated patches can all have a significant impact on grasslands. Grasslands also need to be burnt regularly and burning near urban areas can sometimes be very difficult.
