Fiona Smith is an environmental planner in the Environment and Heritage Division of Parks Victoria. Fiona is currently working on planning for the establishment of the Western Grassland Reserves, a new grassland park which will connect the You Yangs area to the Werribee River across the Volcanic Plains west of Melbourne.
We can try and manage these threats by permanently protecting important grassland areas and undertaking weed control, including controlling the weeds within the grassland and preventing the spread of weeds into the grasslands. Undertaking regular burning or controlled grazing and not doing anything that disturbs the soil are also important management practices.
