Identifying Characteristics

Tufted coarse grass to 70 cm tall. Leaves dark green, 30 cm long, rough. Flower heads droop in slender, one sided clusters. Obvious awns (bristles) on seeds. Flowers mainly August-December.

Distinctive Features

Purple colouring on leaf bases, stem nodes and flowers.
