Fiona Smith is an environmental planner in the Environment and Heritage Division of Parks Victoria. Fiona is currently working on planning for the establishment of the Western Grassland Reserves, a new grassland park which will connect the You Yangs area to the Werribee River across the Volcanic Plains west of Melbourne.

Grassland ecosystems are characterized by being dominated by grasses rather than large shrubs or trees. The grasslands on the Western Volcanic Plains are dominated by tussock-forming grasses such as Kangaroo Grass, Wallaby Grasses, and Spear-grasses. A variety of native flowering daisies, lilies, peas and orchids occur between the tussocks.
