Identifying Characteristics

Tufted grass with stems to 80 cm high. Leaves mostly smooth. Seed head 6-20 cm long, usually held upright. No awns (bristles) on flowers/seeds. Flowers spring-summer.

Distinctive Features

Leaves have a conspicuous midvein and are often a paler shade of green than surrounding grasses.
