Question What are some of the hazards in working in grasslands?
Expert Dr Nick Williams
Dr Nick Williams is a plant ecologist at the University of Melbourne. Nick’s research investigates the ecology of urban areas in particular, grassland ecology and restoration, green infrastructure for climate change adaptation and weed invasions. Nick’s research has highlighted how surrounding landscapes influence the processes that occur in remnant habitats, such as edge effects and local extinctions, and, has developed ways to make urban areas more biodiversity friendly.
Grasslands are generally pretty safe but you do have to keep a lookout for snakes and always when you’re doing field work in summer make sure you are wearing a hat, because it is quite exposed out there and it can be quite windy, so sunburn and windburn can be issues. Also, you have to look out for the rocks as well, you can sometimes trip over, but generally they’re a pretty nice place to be.
