Fiona Smith is an environmental planner in the Environment and Heritage Division of Parks Victoria. Fiona is currently working on planning for the establishment of the Western Grassland Reserves, a new grassland park which will connect the You Yangs area to the Werribee River across the Volcanic Plains west of Melbourne.
There are lots of small and unique species, things that you only see in grasslands and have to look very hard to see, such as Striped Legless Lizards and Golden Sun Moths. There are also unusual flowering herbs such Blue Devils, Feather-heads and Billy-buttons. Working in grasslands is also a great way to get involved in conservation in urban areas. Many of our grassland reserves occur within the urban environment and so provide a place to visit nature right on our doorstep.
