Perform a walk-through survey

  • A walk through survey provides a quick assessment of the site.
  • The results of the walk through survey will depend on when it is conducted.
  • Animals that hide, run or fly away from humans may not be recorded during a walk through survey.
  • A walk through survey is a low cost method of assessment.

The number and types of plants and animals accurately identified will depend on the skills of the person doing the survey.

Plants such as orchids are not visible all year round as they die back to their underground tuber after they have set seed. Some animals are not active during the day and some are less active in winter than in summer. Butterflies need to be surveyed during warmer parts of the day when they are flying.

Small animals such as lizards and invertebrates that hide in the soil, under rocks or in amongst plants such as grass tussocks are less likely to be seen during a walk through survey.
