A range of teacher professional learning programs will be developed to accompany the Biodiversity of the Western Volcanic Plains online outreach...
Fauna for reintroductions are specially bred in conservation breeding programs which require a lot of time, effort and money. Collecting the right kind of data to report back will assist future breeding and reintroduction efforts.
Active monitoring can include:
- surveying at a suitable time of day and time of year for observing that species.
- recording how many of the animals released into the reintroduction site survive
- recording numbers of individuals observed
- mapping the locations where the individuals were observed
- mapping areas of habitat suitable for that species (e.g. rocky areas) and recording if individuals are found within that area.
- recording if the site is safe from introduced predators.
- recording the health and condition of species, and births.
This data will help indicate if the reintroduction program has been successful, and if the reintroduced individuals are breeding, and will help inform future management actions to improve the site for that species.
