Herbicides are chemicals typically applied by spraying or painting the liquid onto the weeds. They generally kill plants through either contact or systemic action.
Herbicides can be selective (designed to kill only specific types of plants e.g. broad-leaved plants) or non-selective (designed to kill all the plants the herbicide lands on, not just the weeds).
Herbicides can injure grassland animals including insects, reptiles and frogs.
